2016, Clinics in Chest MedicineCitation Excerpt :As a second line of evidence demonstrating under-recognition, epidemiologic studies consistently show that only a small minority of AATD individuals are recognized across a range of countries. For example, Tobin and colleagues16 reported that only 4.5% (90/2000) of British AAT-deficient individuals had been identified. Similarly, in the United States, Silverman and colleagues17 reported a detection rate of approximately 4% of the expected number of AAT-deficient individuals based on sampling blood specimens submitted to a St Louis blood bank.
